AI labs are buying data from dead startups to train their models

AI labs are buying data from failed startups, with SimpleClosure brokering over 150 deals and expecting $10 million returned by 2026.

Failing startups' data now worth millions to AI labs training models.

A crypto entrepreneur who wound down his startup has turned it into revenue, netting roughly $25,000 for code and around $15,000 for workspace data through SimpleClosure, a new marketplace connecting failed companies with AI buyers. The platform added data sales in April and has handled over 150 deals, expecting to return over $10 million to startups by end of 2026.

AI labs face limits on public and synthetic datasets, driving demand for real-world alternatives. Companies like Surge AI buy data to build reinforcement-learning gyms where AI agents practice tasks. Pricing varies wildly based on data quality; one company's Slack history can be worth more than another's combined Slack, email, and calendars.

High-value deals are already happening. Google outbid AI data company Mercor to purchase Spirit Airlines' bankruptcy data for $10 million, acquiring 100 million emails, 500 million Teams messages, and 176,000 employee records. Bloomberg reported SpaceX's AI unit is weighing data purchases from struggling startups.

Privacy concerns mount as this market grows. Spirit's flight attendants' union objected to the sale, and legal experts warn of 'legally radioactive' personal details lurking in emails and calendars — doctor appointments, school arrangements, date plans. No federal law currently bans such sales, and proceeds flow to creditors and investors, not employees.

Data prices will likely stabilize in coming years unless an AI bubble pops, but founders have little visibility into buyers' identities or intentions, and little assurance they're receiving fair offers. This emerging market represents both recovery opportunity and unresolved legal and ethical questions about worker data.

AI labs are buying bankrupt startups' data as synthetic training datasets hit limits, raising unresolved privacy and consent questions.

Apple is reportedly developing AI-powered smart glasses designed to compete directly with Meta\'s Ray-Ban AI glasses — and the early details are compelling.

Unlike the Vision Pro, these will have no display at all. Instead, they\'ll rely entirely on AI processing: cameras, Siri integration, and ambient computing. Four frame styles are planned, with premium acetate construction targeting a fashion-forward audience.

The $499 starting price positions them as a premium-but-accessible device — significantly cheaper than Vision Pro but pricier than Meta\'s Ray-Bans. A 2027 launch window gives Apple time to refine the AI stack that will power them.

This move signals Apple\'s belief that ambient AI wearables — not VR headsets — will be the mainstream computing interface of the next decade.

Chats never saved. No cloud. Free on iOS and Android right now.', body: '

Google has released Gemma 4, its most capable on-device AI model yet — and it\'s free on both iOS and Android.

The key differentiator: everything runs locally. Your conversations never leave your device, never hit a server, and are never stored. For privacy-conscious users, this is a significant shift.

Performance gains are substantial. Gemma 4 is reportedly 4x faster than its predecessor and uses 60% less battery — critical specs for a model running continuously on mobile hardware. Google claims it reaches 140 million Android devices immediately at launch.

This puts real competitive pressure on Apple Intelligence and signals that on-device AI is no longer a compromise — it\'s becoming the preferred architecture for consumer AI.

The consensus among leading AI researchers is shifting from "if" to "when" — and increasingly, the answer is "soon."

A growing number of labs now believe AGI will compress decades of civilizational change into a single decade. Not one industrial revolution, but ten — simultaneously — across medicine, energy, materials science, software, and beyond.

This framing is gaining traction not as hyperbole but as a calibrated forecast from people with direct access to the most capable systems being built today.

What changes first: knowledge work. Then physical labor. Then scientific research itself. The sequencing matters less than the speed.
